It goes without saying that for businesses, their employees are their biggest assets. But when your employees don’t perform, they’re setting you up for disaster!

The way your employees behave, and their overall attitude towards clients says a lot about the type of business you operate.

When a client walks in, your employees should engage them and make them feel comfortable. Remember that your clients will associate your services with the type employees you hire.

So, when you’re in the middle of the hiring process, make sure you take these tips into consideration:

  • Pre-Interview Candidates

As a busy individual, you don’t want to waste 30 minutes with someone you won’t hire. The best way to weed out such candidates is to pre-interview them. Analyze them over the phone.

Most people practice for face-to-face introductions. Nobody prepares for phone interviews. When you call them after receiving their application, conduct a mini interview.

How they answer tricky questions should give you a hint. Of course, if you feel they deserve a second chance, by all means call them for a face-to-face interview!

  • Create the Perfect Job Description

Job descriptions define what you expect the potential employee to do. It’s one of the most important factors to take into consideration during the hiring process.

You need to outline your expectations specifically. One of the problems with most job descriptions is that they focus on defining the individual and educational requirements. They tend to forget about skills and capabilities, as well as experience.

Identify the targets you want the individual to achieve and then list them down. Your business’s goals should be determined by these factors:

  • The timeline:targets you want to achieve within 6 months
  • Sales revenue:the amount of clients an employee can bring in/retain.
  • Client experience:how employees will cater to all types of clients

But make sure that the goals you set are realistic and achievable. Don’t expect employees to accomplish targets deemed impossible. Always set your expectations according to the strengths and weaknesses of your staff.

  • Look Out for Those Who Are Uncommitted from the Start

If you’re waiting for a candidate to show up at a specific time for an interview and they have an excuse, don’t hire them.

It’s understandable for emergency cases where their car breaks down or someone dies. But excuses like, baby sitting or visiting family should not be acceptable.

The main reason for this is that you want someone who is reliable. You don’t want them to miss work because they have other commitments.

Hire someone who is dedicated and willing to come in for an interview despite unforeseen circumstances. This shows how dedicated they are.

Think about it.

If they have a bunch of excuses for not showing up for the interview, how will they show up for work? Hire someone who is committed to the job even on a rainy day.

Bad-Mouthing Former Employers

When you’re hiring, look out for gossiping hens. Surveys show that 8 years is the maximum employee tenure. But most new recruits don’t stay for more than 6 months.

There are a number of reasons for this so ask the candidate why they left. If they bad mouth their former employer, that’s a good enough reason not to hire them!

Body Language

How your employees interact with your clients says everything. Studies show that it takes 7 seconds to make a lasting impression.

Observe their body language. Look out for signs that the candidate is nervous or taking everything casually. There’s a significant difference between confidence and being casual. If someone doesn’t look serious, don’t hire them.

Personal trainers should be confident in their abilities, polite and knowledgeable. If they lack the confidence to talk to clients, they can drive them away.

Of course, don’t hire someone self-absorbed. Hire someone who has a positive outlook and a charming personality.

The tone they use, the way they speak, their overall manners, and the way they dress are all things to take into consideration.

Remember to take your time and not rush through things, Haste makes waste. Take your time to analyze the individual before hiring them!
