It was when her 9 year-old started struggling with her weight that Jane Silber realized there aren’t any fitness centers for kids.

The Centers for Disease Control states that obesity in children has tripled since the 70s.  So when Jane found out that gyms don’t have memberships for kids, she realized this was a great business opportunity.

She opened Generation Now Fitness for pre-teens and teenagers. In addition, the gym is equipped with fun-to-operate equipment and even has its own smoothie bar!

Setting up your own gym isn’t difficult but creating a niche one is. But that doesn’t mean it’s impossible! With the right plan and resources, you can find your niche!

Here are a few things to consider to get you started:

Know Your Niche

Silber was able to succeed because she knew her niche. She had a pre-teen with a problem. So do your research and find what people want.

The thing about research is that you can never do enough of it. You need to delve into everything and find out what your potential clients want. Look into the latest trends, demographics, and purchase the latest equipment.

Find the Right Location

This can be a little tough but you will need to look into demographics. Silber found success because she researched the market for a couple of months and looked into areas prevalent with child obesity.

She then opened her fitness center in an area where there were schools and parks.

If you’re catering to people between the ages of 18–30, you need to find a location accordingly. Millennial groups tend to hang out in more urban areas, with bars and shopping centers.

Make sure that your gym is in a centralized location and not in a corner where it can get overshadowed.

Also, make sure you don’t pick a location that is next to other gyms.

Offer Amenities

This is where you can get creative! Offer something your members they can look forward to. Some gyms offer stress management classes in addition to fitness. Offering additional services will help retain members and attract new ones.

Here are a few ideas you take into consideration:

Career Advice

Offer an option for career advice to members who want to become personal trainers, or open their own fitness center.

Stress Management

Stress is one of the leading causes of weight gain. When individuals don’t have a way to manage their stress levels, they tend to indulge in emotional eating.

This is because food offers comfort and helps soothe the nerves. But in reality, this is dangerous and obesity can lead to chronic illnesses like diabetes and cardiovascular problems.

Reading Area

While members relax after an intense workout, they can sit in the reading area and read a book. Stack it with magazines and books on self-help and fitness.

Remember that educated and well-informed clients will make wise decisions. By educate your members about the importance of wellness, you empowering them.

Furthermore, you can also stack up on nutrition books. This will help your members find ways to eat healthy and learn about alternative ingredients they can use. Let them cook their favorite foods in a healthy way and allow them to get creative!

Kids’ Fitness Area

Create a separate area for kids. Invest in easy-to-use, kids-friendly equipment. This will allow parents to spend time with their kids while they workout.

Furthermore, it will help kids learn the value of wellness from a young age. Remember that obesity in children has tripled since the 70s. This is one of the best ways to combat the problem.

Weekly Wellness Workshops

Conduct weekly workshops that focus on educating members and their kids about the importance of a healthy diet. Focus on mental wellbeing as well and give them all worksheets to work with.

Focus on how they can create a healthy atmosphere at home and promote wellness in the community.

These are just a few things to take into consideration if you want to set up a niche gym.
